Bernard Otieno, MCIArb, Advocate.
BO is the Team Leader and Group Managing Partner. He holds extensive experience in contentious banking and commercial matters, insurance and company litigation, industrial and labor relations, tortuous and civil liability claims, enforcement of intellectual property rights, consumer rights law and public law litigation with cumulative experience extending to ten (10) years.
He also undertakes commercial arbitration, creation and perfection of securities for secured lending, property transactions, business organization and legislative drafting.
BO graduated from the University of Nairobi with a Bachelor of Laws degree in 2005 and underwent article clerkship at Messrs. RaffmanDhanji Elms & Virdee Advocates between 2005 and 2006 simultaneously obtaining a Post Graduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law in December 2006.
He thereafter interned with the Legal & Investigations Departments of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) between February 2007 and January 2008. He was admitted to the Roll of Advocate on 15th November 2007.
He is currently pursuing an LLM Degree in International Commercial Law from the University of London (International Programs) and has deep interest in commercial law and arbitration.
After admission, BO briefly worked with Miller & Company Advocates for about eight months from February 2008 to October 2008 where after he moved to Messrs. Mohamed Madhani & Company Advocates where he worked for four and a half years from November 2008 to May 2013 climbing to the position of Senior Associate and Deputy Head of Litigation.
From May 2013 to November 2014, he initially practiced under the name of Otieno & Abib Advocates before incorporating the current firm.
He was recently retained by the Credit Information Sharing Association of Kenya (CIS Kenya) in Partnership with Financial Sector Deepening Trust (FSD, Kenya) as a lead legal consultant and trainer in legal risk analysis and legislative drafting.
The consultancy resulted to the drafting of two bills, namely; the Credit Information Sharing Bill, 2016 and the Credit Information Sharing Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
BO is a member of the International Bar Association, the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and the East Africa Law Society. He is a qualified member arbitrator with the UK’s Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.
Outside practice, BO is a founding Trustee of the Dennis Awich Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation (DASCAF) and also volunteers with Kibali Trust (a Christian charitable organization specializing in educating orphans and children from other disadvantaged backgrounds).
